Here to answer your questions

How would I know that I am losing excessive hair or potentially have a hair loss problem?

By noticing the appearance of thinning hair or a receding hairline yourself or other people might inform you, as you may not always notice or want to notice it yourself. Also excessive hair loss when washing, brushing, on your pillow or on your hands when styling your hair.

What is the normal hair growth cycle?

Everyone is born with a fixed number of hair follicles on their scalp that produce hair throughout their lifetime. Hair grows from the base of the follicle at a rate of about one centimetre a month for about three years. The growth phase is called the anagen phase. After the anagen phase, the hair dies (catagen hair) and no longer grows. It sits dormant in the follicle for a three-month period called the telogen phase. After the telogen phase, the hair follicle undergoes another anagen phase to produce new hair that grows out of the same follicle. As it grows, the old telogen hair is dislodged or pushed out. This is a cycle that continues throughout a persons life.

What is the anagen phase?

Anagen is the active growth phase of hair follicles. The cells in the root of the hair are dividing rapidly, adding to the hair shaft. During this phase the hair grows about 1 cm every 28 days. Scalp hair stays in this active phase of growth for 2–7 years. The amount of time the hair follicle stays in the anagen phase is genetically determined. At the end of the anagen phase an unknown signal causes the follicle to go into the catagen phase.

What is the catagen phase ?

The catagen phase is a short transition stage that occurs at the end of the anagen phase. It signals the end of the active growth of a hair. This phase lasts for about 2–3 weeks while a club hair is formed.

What is the telogen phase?

The telogen phase is the resting phase of the hair follicle. The club hair is the final product of a hair follicle in the telogen stage, and is a dead, fully keratinized hair. Fifty to one-hundred club hairs are shed daily from a normal scalp.
